2004

Nessa's main work in 2004 has been 8 months spent researching and editing 8 volumes of unpublished works by Edward Elgar. These were published on 1 January 2005 and comprise his entire early output for wind quintet (with a second flute replacing the more usual horn; the clarinet throughtout is in C rather than B flat), mixed quintet (Elgar shifted from bassoon to cello in 1879) and mixed sextet (adding a violin). This extensive research was partly funded by a grant from the major risk consultancy TTAC Ltd. It is hoped that these pieces will be recorded in 2005.

~ The Berlioz Historical Brass Society has commissioned Nessa to go to Paris to copy out and edit a large set of pieces of Harmoniemusik (music for windband) by Karl Goepfert, a pupil of Mozart. The pieces are dedicated to Napoleon as First Cousul (1800-02) and are scored for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, trumpet and serpent. The Sarastro Music publication will be the first from the manuscript parts.

~ Nessa has been commissioned to compose the music for the Eastern Kentucky University production of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. The play will be produced 1-4 October at the Gifford Theatre, Richmond, Kentucky. Nessa met the director, Jeffrey Boord-Dill in an Internet chat room and they have become close friends. Her meticulous research into the time and place in which the play is set has resulted in historically accurate accompaniment. She has even researched the Jewish music of that period to compose music related to Shylock," the Jewish moneylender in Venice and one of Shakespeare's most memorable characters.

~ Nessa has been commissioned to compose and play all the music for the Tyger's Heart Theatre Company production of William Congreve's restoration comedy The Way of the World. The production is at the Gatehouse Theatre, Highgate, London, from 27 May to 21 June.

~ Nessa's arrangement of Johann Strauss's Geschichte aus dem Wienerwald, Op. 235 (Tales of the Vienna Woods) will be premiered at St Florian, Austria on 20th August. Scored for the 13 wind instruments of Mozart's Gran Partita, K.361 (2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassethorns, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, double bass), this work was commissioned by the Collegium Viennense to celebrate the Centenary of Strauss's death.

~ Nessa has edited several previously unknown works for Brass Quintet
(3 horns, trumpet, bass trombone) by Erbprinz Carl Friedrich von Löwenstein-Freudenberg-Wertheim for the new CD by the London Gabrieli Brass Ensemble. These pieces from the 1820s, including dances and a substantial Tema con Variazioni, are among the earliest works for this combination of instruments. The Erbprinz (a term denoting the second son) was a lifelong enthusiast for wind and brass music and composed numerous works for various combinations using musicians from the Court Band at Wertheim-am-Main. ~ Nessa's Sinfonia Folklorica for soprano soloist, chorus & orchestra will be premiered in London in 2000. The soloist has been confirmed but we cannot as yet reveal who it is. Be prepared to be surprised though.

~ Nessa is currently preparing for the autumn recording of her full-scale composition, Sticks and Stones. This work is scored for instruments made entirely from wood or stone, (or configured samples of the sounds).

~ Sarastro Music will shortly be releasing Nessa's CD of Piano Jazz from Prague, 1919-28. Nessa is the foremost expert on this largely unknown area of music which was suppressed by the Nazis and the Communists. It is almost certain that the European style of jazz originated in Prague, where a group of 'Young Turks' ~ fresh from the Prague Conservatoire of Music and encouraged by the great sense of freedom in the newly-created Czechoslovakia ~ composed numerous exuberant and demanding piano words in the new musical language of jazz.
