Biography

Nessa Glen SOMEDAY my ship will come in . . . and I'll be waiting at the train station. . .

Look, this is a free WebSite ~ they don't give you many page options ~ for free you want Bill Gates already? Besides, if you've actually come to this page you've come through a Filtering System of sorts anyways (I didn't put the Photos Button first through VANITY, dear!) so hopefully you're interested rather than just curious. We're "Under Construction" here, as they say, so more will probably be added when I have the time. By the bye, I fall into the Diagnostic Manual category, "Atypical Gender Disorder" so if you're looking for Thrills you might as well leave now because you'll be disappointed.
Right, then, off we jolly well go!

Let's put things in perspective right from the start: if my fairy godmother (1) ever came back (she's WELL overdue!) and said that I could choose between realising all my dreams in Music or Gender ~ at the cost of the other ~ I wouldn't even stop to think. Music has always been my great love. Mind you, I can see the irony in that statement. I have a memory (age 2-3) of looking in a mirror and thinking, "THIS isn't me..." I started piano lessons at 6 ~ so the two thematic strands of my life have been inextricably intertwined from an early age. Music always provided both a consolation for the difficulties of being transgendered and a private means of expressing what I felt. Without music I doubt if I could have carried on all these years. Without being transgendered I probably would not have chosen a career in music ~ so I have THAT to thank for not ending up as a smug accountant or lawyer in somewhere like Akron, Ohio (Akronites: apologies!).

Mamá: The Good News and The Bad News...
The Good News is that you have the daughter you've always wanted.
The Bad News is...I'm a Lesbian.

A few personal details for now: I grew up at the top of New York State, ESCAPED to Philadelphia for 5 wonderful years at the University of Pennsylvania. I first went to Europe when I had just turned 19, fell in love with England and moved here after grad school. I've lived mostly in the south of England (very little snow!) and moved to London (Putney, SW15) in 1984. London is HOME and always will be (although I often feel drawn to Prague and Vienna).

I share a flat - bursting to the seams with music and books - near the Thames with my four faithful stuffed friends, 3 Rabbits: Bunny (white), Oscar (black with white markings) & Holly (brown) and, of course, Frida the Wolflet (who's VERY good at hiding!). Lovers, Friends & Acquaintances come and go, but The Animals are ALWAYS faithful. They've added their favourite Sites to the Links Page and now want their Own Page; knowing them like I do, they'll probably get it! (In fact, they DID! Clicking on their Very Own Applet will take you there.)

The Animals !

Being a freelance Composer, Musician and Musicologist, I don't know where work ends and fun begins; having a reversed body clock (they REALLY messed up the specifications when they made me!), I love the Night and, not surprisingly, the London Club Scene. I try to get out dancing at least twice a week.

I try to avoid getting stuck in the TG 'ghetto' as much as I can and revel in the broad diversity offered by this wonderful City ~ opera, concerts, theatre, cinema, galleries, museums, restaurants, clubs, shopping. There's never enough time to take it all in; I'm just finishing up a 20-year(!) research project ~ about 2 months to go! ~ and am planning a 'binge' once the 3rd volume goes off to my publishers.

I've finally managed to find the time (around writing a 12,000 word article on Prague) to put up my Serious Classical Music Website. Thanks to Sarastro Music! You'll find buttons for it on both the Home & Links Pages.

Well, here's a turnip for the books ~ the seminal Progresive Rock band, Gnidrolog re-formed in 1999 and invited me to join. So I'm a Rock Chick ~ never too old to rock (at least that's what they say...) I played one gig with them in November 1999, and recorded Gnosis in 1999 and 2000. Teaming up with them was an extremely difficult decision and it took me at least three seconds to make up my mind... Sadly, the band split up (again!) through internal problems. However, I have a BIG progressive rock solo CD from the project and am trying to get a deal for it. Never too old, &c, &c...

I'm also currently working on a Tranny musical: "The Phantom of the pre-Opera".

Well, that gives you SOMETHING to go on for now...

FOOTNOTES
(1) My earliest memory is of the Fairies bidding me Farewell after they had exchanged me for my parent's actual son. The Fairies were obviously of the Sidhe. (OK, so even James Joyce ~ or Joyce James even ~ wouldn't have stooped to THAT pun, but we might as well get some of these remarks copyrighted now whilst we're at it.) Mind you, my parents got off relatively lightly ~ the Sidhe COULD have left a turnip. Hmmmmmm ~ guess it's really a matter of perspective...
